In Retrospect: My Favorite Locally Available Wines for 2008.

No pictures. No notes. No Musings. No panel of judges, secret or otherwise.

These are my favorite locally available wines for the past year 2008.

Please note the following:

  • Around 90+% of the red (Bordeaux, Burgundy, even Rhône) I drink/write about are not locally available - those few that are, are sometimes bought abroad anyway;
  • I really prefer Old World wines to New World, though I am always open to trying something new;
  • It is no secret that some of the sellers and/or shareholders of the sellers are friends of mine, but, rest assured, this does not affect my judgment;
  • A wine's making or not making it in my list doesn't mean much unless we have similar taste in wine - and - though I do try many, I haven't tried all out there;
  • Aside from the wines I have posted on in my blog, I have tasted many others but those did not interest me enough to commit to memory, much less write about;
  • Some wines may no longer be currently in stock;
  • I did not consider price in my ranking;
  • The prices are full retail as of the time I purchased the wines (they may have gone up) and are included merely for readers' convenience in case they are considering buying some;
  • If I list less than 3 in any category, that means that I didn't think much of the other locally available wines that I've tried in such category, or, as in the case of Tempier Bandol Rosé, there is no other in its class locally available;
  • Luxury wines, except rosé, will bear no price as those who would buy these can/should easily afford them anyway; and,
  • Those bearing a red asterisk are those I consider as having exceptional quality-to-price-ratio (QPR).

Thanks for this list - I'll definitely keep an Eye On (these) Wines :-) Like you, I prefer Old World versus New World.

Agree with you on the reisling and gewurztraminer vintages from Léon Beyer Comtes d'Eguisheim, as well as those from Bott-Geyl. Loved them!

Am beginning to appreciate more and more Spanish wines, too.

I just hope more restaurants do away with exorbitant corkage fees so we can enjoy these good wines with good food. It's really myopic of them to discourage BYO's. Maybe a post on a list of restaurants with reasonable corkage rates will be helpful too :-) I know Je Suis charges P250, and Aubergine P750. But Cicou charging P1000 (which I read in Miguel's blog, if I remember right) is just too much!

Hi, Socky.

I'll try to make a list, as you suggest, as that would surely be hlepful to fellow wine-lovers. I don't know how extensive it would be, though, as I tend to go to the same restaurants all the time. Will give it a shot though.

Yes, I was the one who warned Mig about Ciçou's corkage policy. Ridiculous. Ana Soenen told me they plan to do a special menu one day a week and waive corkage during that day for diners who partake of the special menu. However, last I spoke to her, they haven't concretized this plan yet.

Pity. P1000/bottle corkage is ridiculous and has kept me from returning.

Best,

N

You are right. 1000 is just excesive and has also kept me from going back to Cicou.

Lets try to come up with that list. I can help you with other restaurants.

Hi Noel
I just received an invitation from Cicou. No corkage on these 2 days. How do you find the menu vis-a-vis the price at P3500++, with a minimum requirement of 10 persons?
After reading Jay Lab's bad experience with Cicou, I am not so hot anymore to try this new menu..hehe
unless you have some good insights which may influence me and your followers.

Hi, Nelson. I received that e-mail also. Let's just say that I am not interested in attending that dinner on either date, corkage or no corkage.

Great list! Glad to see some old favs on it! I am really excited to dive into the French wines, especially that Rose you recommended.

Nice way to start the new year :)

Go for it. The 2007 Tempier Bandol Rosé is truly exceptional, even compared to the previous vintages of theirs that I've had.

Many find P2000+ steep for a rosé, but I think it well merits its price. I'd even pay more for it.
